DAXXIFY®: aesthetic and therapeutic applications

A neutral overview of approved adult uses, its formulation, and important safety questions to discuss with your clinician.

← Return to the DAXXIFY overview

DAXXIFY® (daxibotulinumtoxinA-lanm) is a prescription botulinum toxin type A treatment given by appropriately trained healthcare professionals. Our practice uses it for aesthetic and therapeutic purposes. The appropriate setting, eligibility, and intended goals are determined through clinical evaluation.

Two FDA-approved indications in adults

Aesthetic use

Glabellar lines

Temporarily improves the appearance of moderate-to-severe frown lines between the eyebrows when caused by activity of specific muscles.

Therapeutic use

Cervical dystonia

Treats cervical dystonia, a condition characterized by involuntary neck muscle contractions and altered head or neck positions in adults.

Other therapeutic uses: These are not part of DAXXIFY’s FDA-approved indications. A clinician must distinguish any off-label use from approved treatment and assess individual risks and benefits. This page does not establish that every off-label use is available at our practice.

Frequently asked questions

What is different about the formulation?

DAXXIFY combines botulinum toxin type A with a peptide-containing formulation. A peptide is a short chain of amino acids, and the formulation is designed to stabilize the active ingredient without human- or animal-derived stabilizing proteins. This does not mean it is safer or more appropriate for every person.

When can an effect be noticed?

In studies for adult glabellar lines, some patients reported measurable improvement within two days. More than 50% had no or mild lines at six months in clinical trials. Individual response varies, and these aesthetic study findings do not describe expected outcomes for all therapeutic uses.

Is DAXXIFY the same as another botulinum toxin medicine?

No. Though products may act on muscles through a related mechanism, each has distinct approvals and safety information. Their biological potency units cannot be compared or converted directly.

Does an aesthetic result predict a therapeutic effect?

No. Aesthetic trials measure appearance-related endpoints, whereas therapeutic care focuses on a medical condition and relevant functional outcomes. The clinician should explain the expected goals and limitations for the specific condition.

Important safety information

Boxed warning — distant spread of toxin effect: DAXXIFY and other botulinum toxin medicines can have effects beyond the injection area. Serious problems with swallowing, speaking, or breathing can occur, even hours to weeks afterward, and may be life-threatening. Seek immediate medical help if these symptoms occur.

Who should not receive it: Individuals with a known allergy to DAXXIFY or other botulinum toxin products, or an infection at the proposed treatment site. Other medical conditions can affect suitability.

Health history matters: Tell your clinician about muscle or nerve disorders, breathing or swallowing problems, pregnancy or breastfeeding, previous botulinum toxin treatments, and all medications or supplements.

Commonly reported effects: For glabellar-line treatment, reported effects include headache, drooping eyelid and temporary facial weakness. For cervical dystonia, effects may include headache, discomfort at the injection site, muscle weakness, and upper respiratory symptoms. Serious adverse effects are possible.

Questions to discuss during an evaluation

  • Is the intended use FDA-approved or off-label?
  • What outcomes and risks are relevant to the medical or aesthetic concern being evaluated?
  • Could other medical conditions or current medicines affect treatment safety?
  • What warning signs call for urgent medical attention?
  • What alternative options are appropriate for the condition?
